Pay Per View: SSL Explained

January 10, 2012 1

Why do I need an SSL certificate?

Encrypting credit card and personal data during payment transactions is important if you wish to keep the trust of your users. Indeed, many payment processers will not allow transactions unless they secured by SSL.

Using NetroMedia’s Pay Per View gateway service requires the use of an SSL certificate.

Where can I purchase an SSL certificate?

 – GoDaddy (https://www.godaddy.com)
 – Trustwave (https://www.trustwave.com)
 – Comodo (https://www.comodo.com)
 – VeriSign (https://www.verisign.com)

Information Requirements:

  • Domain or Sub-Domain (e.g. https://netromedia.com, or https://ppv.netromedia.com)
  • Your organizations Country Code
  • Your organizations State/Province
  • Your organizations City/Locality
  • Your organizations Name
  • The Organizational Unit
How do I proceed?

You need to decide at which URL you wish to deploy your Pay Per View setup. This allows us to generate a CSR (Certificate Signing Request) that is used when you purchase your SSL cert. To generate this, we need to know the URL that will be used for your PPV gateway.

You have two choices:

You can use a subdomain of your existing domain. This will record the addition of an DNS A record pointing your subdomain to NetroMedia.

https://ppv.yourexitsingdomain.com

You can register a new domain, which will be used for your PPV. The A record for the domain must point to NetroMedia, with a CNAME record for www.

https://www.example.com

Once you have decided on the URL for your PPV Gateway, please let us know so we can generate a CSR to allow you to purchase your SSL certificate.

What options do I have if I don’t want to purchase an SSL certificate?

You can redirect to a 3rd party payment processor (like PayPal, Google Checkout, etc) to enter the credit card information, then you don’t need an SSL certificate because your website won’t touch the credit card information.
