Windows Media Encoder Series 9
Microsoft® Windows Media™ Encoder is an easy-to-use, powerful production tool that enables content developers to convert both live and prerecorded audio, video, and computer screen images to Windows Media Format for live and on-demand delivery. Windows Media Encoder now captures Windows Media Video 8 content in real-time for streaming delivery, and creates Windows Media Audio 8 for streaming and download. For best motion picture quality download video, professionals should still use the Windows Media Encoding Utility.
The following improvements are features of Windows Media Encoder:
- Ease of Use
- Highest Quality Encoding
- Improved Programmability and Administration
Ease of Use A new graphical user interface and wizard make it easy to configure and produce great looking Windows Media-based content for both live and on-demand delivery over the Internet. Support for source switching means greater control over live event content delivery.
- Easier Session Wizard
Guides users through the process of setting up an encoding session, target bandwidths, and quality options using fast and easy Session Wizard steps.
- Multiple Source Support
Enables definition of multiple input sources per session as "source groups." Source groups can be devices, disk files, or combinations of both. For special streaming applications, users can maintain video settings and device properties per source group.
- On-the-Fly Source Switching
Allows greater control over live event content production and delivery by enabling users to switch between live and prerecorded input sources.
- Improved Profile Creation and Management
Allows creation of custom profile settings that can be easily copied, saved, and shared among encoding stations. The Profile Manager enables users to manage system and custom profiles.
- Improved Visual Feedback
Enables greater monitoring of the encoding process in terms of encoding image size, data rates, and real-time controls for encoding and statistics. Highest Quality Encoding New encoding capabilities, such as support for de-interlacing, inverse telecine, and screen capture, result in higher quality output. Windows Media Encoder now supports Windows Media Audio and Video 8 for streaming.
- Enables Improved Output Quality
Includes support for the Windows Media Audio and Video 8 codecs for streaming applications, which results in higher quality output for high motion content (320 × 240 × 60 fps from an interlaced source using unique processing capabilities), as well as improved quality at 640 × 480 × 30 fps.
- Enables Screen Capture to File and Real-Time Broadcast
Includes an easy process for creating screen capture and training demos using the Windows Media screen capture codec.
- Supports Processing for De-Interlacing
Improves video playback quality of TV-sourced content by reducing the flicker effect of progressive scan-line displays (computer monitors).
- Allows Pass-Through Encoding
Enables files to be passed through to Windows Media Encoder without any re-compression for those sources that reference Windows Media Format files.
- Supports Inverse Telecine
Results in improved playback quality for film-sourced content. Video content that originated from 24-fps film is padded with extra frames for delivery at 30 fps. The Encoder intelligently extracts the original 24 fps and encodes this out at 24 fps, eliminating artifacts. This results in improved quality at a lower bandwidth.
- Supports Leading Video Capture Cards
Includes support for the new Osprey-500 DV Pro, as well as capture cards from Winnov, Intel, Gadget Labs, and many others. For more information, go to Windows Media Hardware Product Vendors.
- Supports Multigigabyte Files and Uncompressed Capture
Capture directly to Windows Media Format and create archive files that are over 30 GB in size. This capture feature, combined with support for capturing uncompressed audio and video, provides previously unavailable capture and archive capabilities.
- Enables Encoder-based Time Compression
Allows users to adjust pause removal and playback expansion of audio and video files, which further reduces playback time. Improved Programmability and Administration The improved Windows Media Encoder SDK enables Web developers to fully automate the Encoder's functionality including realtime capture and Windows Media and Audio 8 streaming.
- Extensible Platform
Allows Web developers and administrators to administer encoders residing on other clients on the local area network (LAN). Developers can use distributed component object model (DCOM) through full access to the Encoder's application programmable interface (API). Developers can also access functionality using active server pages (ASPs).
- Improved Windows Media Encoder SDK
Enables full programmatic control and automation of Encoder functionality through the Windows Media Encoder SDK. Allows control and automation of the Encoder's user interface (UI), engine control, inputs and outputs, and source creation and switching.
- Increased Distribution Capacity through UNICAST
Allows distribution of up to 50 simultaneous Windows Media streams directly from the Encoder.
